Fernand Melgar et le cinéma d’intervention sociale [The Socially Engaged Cinema of Fernand Melgar]

Tuesday, October 4, 2016

4:00 P.M. – 6:30 P.M.

-

Ballantine Hall 217

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Jnx9veezzg

François Mulot (PhD in French Studies from IU, 2014) will give a lecture on the representation of illegal immigrants and asylum seekers in the work of Swiss filmmaker Fernand Melgar, particularly the docu-dramas La Forteresse (The Fortress, 2008) and Vol spécial (Special Flight, 2011).

The lecture will address issues of film aesthetics, directing, and production, as well as the sociopolitical stakes and function of documentary cinema in the context of Switzerland’s « direct » democracy.

The lecture, to be given in French, will be followed by discussion in French and English. Co-sponsored by The Department of French and Italian and the Institute for European Studies.
