On Tuesday, November 7th, at 4:00 PM, Leonidas Karakatsanis, assistant director at the British Institute at Ankara, will be presenting a talk at GISB 4067.
During a period in which the entire Middle East is riddled by conflict and Europe’s once robust unity is damaged by the effects of a mismanaged economic crisis leading to the growth of nationalist tensions within the EU structure, Turkish-Greek relations appear, so far, surprisingly immune to the revival of such tensions around them. This lecture will explore the significance of a long history of cross-national and cross-societal efforts of Turks and Greeks for overcoming a symbolic wall of hatred and enmity and consolidating peace. It will evaluate the results of such a process since 1974 until today and reflect on the sustainability of the link created against the growing regional tensions.
