How the European Union Legislates in 24 Languages

Wednesday, October 31, 2018

12:00 P.M. – 1:00 P.M.

-

Join EURO for a presentation by Réka Somssich, Associate Professor, ELTE University, Budapest, Faculty of Law. The presentation will take place at noon on Oct. 31 (GISB 3067), and lunch will be provided. Please see the abstract below.

The European Union is unique in the world for having 24 official languages in which it must legislate. Focusing on how multilingual drafting of legal texts is managed within the European Union’s institutional framework, this presentation will address the measures and mechanisms intended to enhance the quality of the different language versions; the role and status of lesser-used official languages, which are influenced by the use of English as the predominant drafting language; and the future role of English after the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the EU.
