International Conference on Netherlandic Studies

This year, in Bloomington, Indiana University will host the biennial International Conference for Netherlandic Studies on Friday, June 1, and Saturday, June 2, 2018, following a reception on Thursday evening (May 31). The theme of the conference will be "The Changing Lowlands." There will be a keynote speaker and dinner event on Saturday, June 2 for an additional cost.

The conference will be held at the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies on Indiana University's beautiful campus.

Call for Papers

The organizing committee welcomes proposals for three sessions pertaining to the history of art and visual culture in the Low Countries from the Middle Ages to the present. Each session will run 90 minutes in length, leaving sufficient time for three papers plus question-and-answer or remarks by a respondent. Please submit abstracts of 250 words for individual papers or 500 words for complete session proposals, (accompanied by curriculum vitae) to Esther Ham (eham@indiana.edu) with “ICNS Abstract” in the subject line. Review of proposals will begin on December 15, 2017 with acceptance notification in early 2018.

Travel Grants for Graduate Students

Four competitive travel grants at $500 each are available for graduate students presenting a paper at the conference. Make a note in your submitted abstract that you would like to be considered for this additional funding.

Biddle Hotel: For ease of access, conference attendees should consider staying at the Biddle Hotel, which is located in the Indiana Memorial Union, which is ½ mile from the conference location in the Global and International Studies Building. Willkie Dorm Rooms: Another option to consider is staying in the dorm rooms in Willkie Quad, located ½ mile from the conference location. The rooms available will be single air conditioned rooms, which share a full bathroom with one other room. The rate is $49.90 per night. The accommodations are as followed:

Suite-style rooms are furnished with a bed, desk, chair, and dresser. Single occupancy rooms are based on space availability and are reserved for adult guests.
 Suite-style residence rooms include the following amenities at no additional cost:

• Linens, a blanket and pillow and towels
• Shared restrooms by gender (one restroom for two bedrooms)
• Lounges and public areas within building
• AT&T wireless service in selected common areas

Check in will be located at the desk in the North tower (Wilkie consists of 2 towers and a small center building). There is student staff on duty 24 hours. If you arrive after the desk has closed, please call 812-856-4804 and the student on duty will come and check you in.

Internet Connectivity

Indiana University provides AT&T wireless service to visitors free of charge on all campuses. AT&T wireless is not available in the IU Bloomington Halls of Residence except for selected common areas.

To connect, make sure your device's wireless networking (Wi-Fi) is turned on, and select the "attwifi" network (SSID). Travel by Air

Indianapolis International Airport (airport code: IND) is the international airport nearest to Bloomington, IN. Travel from the Indianapolis International Airport to Indiana University can take about one hour by car. Travelers can also opt to utilize a shuttle to travel to and from the airport.
